Professor Kate Miriam Loewenthal’s academic journey began with a BSc (1st Class Honours) in Psychology (1963) and a PhD in Psychology (1967) from University College London. Her career progressed through roles such as Lecturer at City University, London (1968-72), and a long tenure at Royal Holloway and Bedford New College, where she rose from Lecturer (1972) to Professor (2000), becoming Emeritus in 2007. She has held visiting professorships at institutions including Heythrop College, New York University London, Glyndwr University, and the University of Chester. Her research interests encompass the psychology of religion, mental health in cultural-religious groups, and trauma therapy, supported by numerous grants from bodies like the Economic and Social Research Council and the Leverhulme Trust.
Professor Loewenthal balances her professional achievements with a rich family life, reflecting her deep connection to the orthodox Jewish community. Her personal experiences as a wife, mother, and community member inform her work on family dynamics, well-being, and cultural identity.
A passionate educator, she has supervised numerous postgraduate students and developed innovative courses in psychology. As a Trustee of the National Spirituality and Mental Health Forum (NSMHF) since 1995, she advocates for the integration of spirituality into mental health care. Her extensive voluntary roles include serving on school governing bodies and supporting mental health initiatives like Chizuk.
